History
The Fiddler's Companion has thoughts on the origins of the tune - it seems to have roots in a variety of older Scottish, Irish and English tunes. Nevertheless, the tune itself is very much an American one - and is associated with 19th Century USA rural life, through it's popularity and use by popular theater and minstrel groups, notably 'blackface' performers.
